Welcome to Football If you're new to American football, welcome to one of the most exciting sports in the world. This guide will help you understand the basics so you can enjoy watching and following the game.

The Field A football field is 100 yards long with two 10-yard end zones. The field is divided by yard lines every 5 yards, with numbers marked every 10 yards. Key Field Features: • Total length: 120 yards (including end zones) • Width: 53 1/3 yards • Hash marks indicate where plays start • Goal posts at each end for field goals and extra points

Basic Rules

The Objective The goal is simple: score more points than your opponent. Teams do this by moving the ball down the field and into the opponent's end zone.

Downs and Distance • A team has 4 attempts (downs) to move the ball 10 yards • If successful, they get a new set of 4 downs • If they fail, the other team gets the ball • Teams often punt on 4th down if they haven't reached 10 yards

Scoring Touchdown (6 points): Carry or catch the ball in the opponent's end zone Extra Point (1 point): Kick through the uprights after a touchdown Two-Point Conversion (2 points): Run or pass into the end zone after a touchdown instead of kicking Field Goal (3 points): Kick through the uprights during regular play Safety (2 points): Tackle the ball carrier in their own end zone

The Players

Offense (11 players) • Quarterback: Leads the offense, throws passes • Running backs: Carry the ball • Wide receivers: Catch passes • Offensive line: Protect the quarterback, block for runners • Tight end: Blocks and catches passes

Defense (11 players) • Defensive line: Rush the quarterback, stop runners • Linebackers: Versatile defenders, stop runs and passes • Cornerbacks: Cover wide receivers • Safeties: Last line of defense, help everywhere

Special Teams • Kicker: Kicks field goals and extra points • Punter: Punts the ball to the other team • Returners: Return punts and kickoffs

Common Plays Run Plays: The quarterback hands off to a running back who tries to advance Pass Plays: The quarterback throws to a receiver downfield Play Action: Fake a run to set up a pass Screen Pass: Short pass to a back with blockers in front

Key Penalties • Offsides: Crossing the line before the snap (5 yards) • Holding: Illegally grabbing an opponent (10 yards) • Pass Interference: Illegally contacting a receiver (spot foul or 15 yards) • False Start: Offensive player moves before snap (5 yards)

The Flow of a Game Kickoff: One team kicks to the other to start Offensive drives: Teams try to score Turnovers: Interceptions or fumbles change possession Punts: Teams kick away when they can't convert Halftime: 12-15 minute break after 2 quarters Four quarters: 15 minutes each (more with stoppages)
